As the flagship school for the Commonwealth of Virginia, The University of Virginia (UVA) is a highly regarded public institution of higher learning. Nestled in the hills of Charlottesville, Virginia, UVA was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. UVA offers a wide variety of academic pursuits with 121 majors spread across eight undergraduate schools and three professional schools. UVA is also a member of the prestigious research-driven Association of American Universities (AAU).
UVA competes in 27 recognized collegiate sports and is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Represented by a mounted swordsman, UVA's mascot is known as a Cavalier. The Cavaliers are also referred to as the Cavs, the 'Hoos, and the Wahoos. The official school colors are orange and navy blue. The school's fight song goes back to 1923 and is named "The Cavalier Song". Although most of UVA's rivals compete alongside them in the ACC, the Cavaliers also have a healthy rivalry with in-state school Virginia Tech as well as neighboring West Virginia University. Both men's and women's basketball teams moved from the storied University Hall to John Paul Jones Arena in 2006. The football team competes at Scott Stadium. Built in 1931, Scott Stadium is the oldest active football stadium in the state of Virginia. All of UVA's soccer and lacrosse teams play at Klockner Stadium. Opened in 2002, Davenport Field is the home to UVA's baseball team.
UVA leads the ACC with NCAA championships with 18 titles in men's sports. The Cavaliers also have 25 national championships in women's sports. UVA is especially successful in men's soccer (7 NCAA titles and 15 ACC titles), men's lacrosse (5 NCAA titles and 17 ACC titles), women's cross country (2 NCAA titles and 2 ACC titles), women's lacrosse (3 NCAA titles and 5 ACC titles), men's tennis (2 NCAA titles and 12 ACC titles), and women's rowing (2 NCAA titles and 15 ACC titles). The UVA baseball team won the College World Series in 2014. The men's and women's swimming and diving team have had great success with a combined 30 ACC titles. In 2015, the men's athletics program was the recipient of the prestigious Capital One Cup, honoring the overall top men's athletics program in the nation.
