The University of Utah is a public research institution of higher learning and is the flagship school of the state of Utah. Nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, the campus is located just a few miles east of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Established in 1850, the school offers 150 academic programs in 17 colleges and schools and boasts the only medical school in the state. The university is well-known nationally for its commitment to the environment and sustainability. Many of the campus shuttles now run on biodiesel and used vegetable oil and the school is undergoing plans to be the first location in the country to install solar ivy as a renewable energy source.
The official mascot of Utah is the Ute, named after the Ute Native American Tribe. The school's colors are red and white and the fight song heard at all events is "Utah Man". The athletics department is led by Director of Athletics Chris Hill who has been with the program since 1987. Some of his notable hires include legendary men's basketball coach Rick Majerus and popular football coach Urban Meyer. The football team plays at Rice-Eccles Stadium, located on campus. With a seating capacity of over 45,000, this facility also served as the main stadium for the games of the 2002 Winter Olympics. The basketball and gymnastics teams compete at the indoor Jon M. Hunstman Center. Utah enjoys a healthy rivalry with fellow in-state school Brigham Young University.
Utah is a member of the Pacific Coast Conference (Pac-12). The other universities competing in the Pac-12 are Arizona State University, The University of Arizona, Cal-Berkely, The University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), The University of Southern California (USC), The University of Colorado, Oregon State University, The University of Oregon, Stanford University, The University of Washington, and Washington State University. Utah fields 18 varsity teams: six for men, 11 for women, and one co-ed sport. Men's lacrosse will be the newest varsity sport beginning in the 2018-19 academic year. Utah has won an NCAA championship a total of 21 times. The men's basketball team won the title in 1944, the women's gymnastics team has won the championship nine times, and the co-ed ski team has a won a total of 10 national titles, most recently in 2017.
