Wearing their famous carnelian red and white uniforms, the Cornell Big Red are led by their mascot Touchdown. Touchdown is known as the Big Red Bear and can be seen in their logo angrily crawling through the big red Cornell “C. Cornell’s biggest historic rival is Harvard University and the famed rivalry dates all the way back to 1910. The rivalry is most evident at Cornell’s Lynah Rink where the ice hockey teams face-off yearly. During games at Lynah, Cornell fans have been known to throw fish on the ice aimed at the Harvard players.
The men’s and women’s ice hockey teams are the premier programs for the Big Red. The small Lynah Rink in Ithaca, New York seats just over 4,000 crazed Cornell fans. Famed Cornell hockey players to go through the program are Ken Dryden, Matt Moulson, Joe Nieuwendyk, Digit Murphy, Rebecca Johnston and Brianne Jenner. Other Cornell athletics programs include baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, football, men’s and women’s lacrosse, wrestling and crew.
Game days start with singing the fight song “Give My Regards to Davy.” The song was written by Cornell students in 1905 and put to the tune of the infamous “Give My Regards to Broadway.” The lyrics to the tune are some rather inside jokes to those that attend the University, but the whole crowd jumps and sings when the tune plays.
