Boston College Athletics
Boston College is a private Jesuit Catholic research university located 6 miles west of Boston in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Founded in 1863, its main campus features many historic buildings and is a prime example of early collegiate Gothic architecture in the United States. Boston College is a highly regarded academic institution and features nine colleges and schools offering bachelor's degrees, master's programs, and doctoral disciplines. The school has over 9,000 undergraduate students and 5,000 graduate students. Notable graduates of Boston College include former United States Secretary of State John Kerry, former House Majority Leader Tip O'Neill, and current Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh.
The Boston College mascot is an eagle and the costumed character Baldwin the Eagle represents the athletics teams at many competitions. The official school colors are gold and maroon. As America's oldest fight song, "For Boston" can often be heard at live athletics events. The athletics department appointed Martin Jarmond as the new Director of Athletics in 2017. With a seating capacity of 44,500, Alumni Stadium is the site of Boston College's football games and is located on the lower end of campus. The multi-purpose events facility Conte Forum plays host to the school's basketball and hockey teams.
In July 2005, Boston College moved from the Big East Conference to the 15-member Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The other members of the ACC are Clemson University, Duke University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Florida State University, North Carolina State University, Syracuse University, The University of Louisville, The University of Miami, The University of North Carolina, The University of Notre Dame, The University of Pittsburgh, The University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and Wake Forest University. Boston College fields teams in 29 varsity sports. Boston College has won five NCAA championships, all coming in men's hockey. The school also has a rich history of sailing and has won multiple national championships in these events.
