University of Alabama Athletics Program
The University of Alabama has one of the most prominent sports programs in the country. Known mostly for football, the university has seen success in golf, basketball, baseball, women's soccer, women's volleyball and much more. It's an impressive program that's shown the ability to compete for championships year in and year out in a range of sports.
One can't mention Alabama without beginning with the football program. The Crimson Tide, as they are known, are the reigning national champions. They won it all in 2015, too, and reached the College Football Playoff's championship game for the 2016 season. In total, Alabama has won six national championships under head coach Nick Saban, with the first coming in 2009. The team plays in the Southeastern Conference, where it competes in the West division in football. There, it has a major rivalry with Auburn University. At the end of every season, the two teams square off in the so-called Iron Bowl, which is one of the longest-running rivalry games in all of college football. It's featured during the afternoon on the Saturday after Thanksgiving each season.
In all sports, Alabama is known for its customary slogan of "Roll Tide." Its fans often yell this at games, and they sing songs played by the Million Dollar Band, which is Alabama's marching band. While many Alabama fans stock up with various types of merchandise, many wear houndstooth, a black and white checkered look that has been borrowed from former coach Bear Bryant. Bryant was known in particular for his houndstooth hats, which some fans still wear when they go to games at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
While football rules the roost, Alabama has also had success in men's golf. The team won back to back national championships in 2013 and 2014. They also won SEC championships in those years after winning one in 2012. They university has produced a number of very good professional golfers, too, with the most prominent being Justin Thomas, the 2017 PGA Championship and FedEx Cup winner. The program is known for sustained success, including that of Bobby Wyatt, who won the individual men's SEC championship in 2014.
Overall, Alabama has established a tradition of excellent in a host of sports. Its fans are passionate and often travel as well or better than any fans of any school. Alabama has dominated the college football landscape of late, and its success in other sports has managed to keep up.
